Homework M 30

Read books 6 7 8 9 of the Odyssey.  Begin to work on your outlines.  The topics are posted below.  Here is a rubric for an outline  https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/544/1/

Remember you must outline 5-8 paragraphs, with topic sentences for each and 4 supporting details.  Be as specific as possible with examples/lines from the text.

Homework W 25

1. Read books 4 &5 of The Odyssey.

2. Your paper topics if you are curious and want to start preparing in advance.

1.  Talk about some of the gender issues approached by Medea and The Odyssey.  What are some of the cultural roles of women?

2.  Are the characters in the Odyssey static (dont't change) or dyamic (change)? Why or why not. Focus on Telemachus, Penelope, and Odysseus.

3. Discuss the role of Kleos in the Greek Texts.  Discuss how it determines the actions of the players in each book.

Homework M Sept 23

1.  Read The odyssey book 1 2 3. We will have a quiz Monday.

2. Write 1 page answering the following question.  What do you think of Telemachus? What are some of his problems? Be specific from the book. Bring this in hard copy to turn in Monday.

3. Post a reply to the blog mentioning one specific example of how The gods are mentioned in the text, and what it means in context.  Example-  Penelope prays to Apollo to strike the suitors.  Apollo is the god of archery so she is essentially hoping they all get hit by arrows.

If you did not do your homework you are not contributing to the group and will get a zero for the days participation.  I highly advise you complete the assignment by tomorrow to help your fellow group members collate or it will be 00

Homework Wed the 18th

1. Prepare to finish your group projects in the first 20 minutes of class, if you will need more time work on it at home.

2. Get a copy of the Odyssey you will need for Monday

3.  If you were not in class you must complete the assignment on your own.  I will collect it with the homework questions.  The assignment is

Pick 3 ways in which Medea fails to work as an Aristotelian tragedy. Rewrite these scenarios in order to make them fit the rules.  Example:   There is no recognition as such, so Medea would kill her own children by accident, then not realize it until the closing.

Homework Monday the 16th

1. Read Aristotle section 1,2,3.  http://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/poetics.html

2. After reading Aristotle and Medea, answer the following questions in  a few sentences each.  Bring a hard copy to class please. Use the info sheet I posted for help.

a.Does Medea have unity of time? unity of place? unity of action? Identify each and if not explain why.
b.  Does Medea have reversal or recognition/discovery? Identify, if there is not one explain a plot point that could be added.
c.  Does Medea have a tragic hero?  Who is it? Why or why not?  (Specifically according to Aristotle)
d. Do you see any other rules that Medea breaks/follows? Why/ Why not?  For Aristotle would Medea give the audience catharsis.?

Homework Wed the 11th.

1. Make sure you have you Madea book in class, and that you have read the entire play

2. We will have a quiz in the first 10 minutes of class.

3. Print, Read, and bring to class the following

Homework due Monday the 9th

1. Read Medea ( The entire Play). You must bring the book to class with you.

2. Answer the following short answers in 2-3 sentences each  (You must print this and bring it to class.) For each answer use one specific example from the text, write the specific Line and page #


1.  Why do you think Medea felt obligated to kill her children?

2.  What is Creon's opinion of Medea?

3. What are some of Medea's problems in Corinth?

4.What does the chorus do in the play?

5. What are some of Jason's arguments to calm Medea down? Do you think they make sense?
